It’s literally our Independence Day. Any country that was colonized at one point is gonna celebrate their Independence Day and it’s crazy to say that celebration is somehow a negative thing.
4th of July has been a racist/nationalistic celebration can’t believe people are just now catching on 🤦

I’m not against the Fourth of July but it’s very incorrect to portray the United States as being colonized in the same way as other countries who became independent. America was settler colonists who revolted to gain independence from their metropole, and then continued to colonize and subjugate, just without the oversight of England. That’s completely different than Ireland or India or Kenya, who were the colonized people becoming independent.

In fact part of the motivation for American independence was dissatisfaction at Britain prohibiting settlement past the Appalachian mountains. And a huge part of what got the southern colonies on board was fear that Britain was going to free the slaves after Lord Dunmore’s Proclamation. Major motivating factors to the revolution was that Britain wasn’t letting the Americans colonize enough.

We try to portray the American Revolution as being anti-colonial because that feels better. But we aren’t like Ireland. Our country’s independence is much more similar to apartheid South Africa’s, or Rhodesia’s, or Israel’s.
