Christopher Columbus has nothing to do with us history and is a token historical figure used by Italian immigrants of the 1900s to tie their culture to America to Americanize the Italian diaspora.

He actually was treated like a stain on Italian history for a long time. Like, you know how fucked of a guy you have to be for Italy of the time to want to EXILE you? For being CRUEL to “lesser” peoples and cultures?

Not used BY the Italians at first At least. Govt gave them a holiday to apologize for how racist the “real” white people were being to the Italian immigrants.

Yeah New Orleans lynched 11 causing a diplomatic incident with the Italian government so president Harrison created a one time holiday on the 400 year anniversary. It was “celebrated” again in 1942 when FDR removed Italian Americans from the enemy aliens list. Although those in interment camps would stay till Italys surrender in September of 1943 Took another couple of decades of lobbying till it got recognized federally in 1971
