It used to be yes. It was from 3 primary things: Coal & oil heating, industrial / vehicle exhaust, and thousands of giant trash incinerators. These things filled the air with thick, yellow smoke and rained ash down onto the city. NYC’s air quality problem is a big part of why the EPA was created
