The medical examiner confirmed that George Floyd’s drug use (meth/fentanyl) could have been a contributing factor. Keep in mind fentanyl is a respiratory depressant, which forces your body’s respiratory response to slow down significantly. Fentanyl is so lethal it can be absorbed thru the skin and kill you from just touching it. The actions of the officers without a doubt were a cause, but I’d say was mostly attributed to drug use. However, he did not deserve to die.
The medical examiner found fentanyl and meth in Floyd’s system at levels that could have been fatal in other situations. That matters because his body was already compromised and the restraint was one factor on top of that, not the sole cause. The ruling of homicide does not erase the fact that his drug use and health played a major role in why he could not handle the restraint. If he had not been that impaired, the outcome could have been different.
But unfortunately, drugs are not a moral agent and cannot be blamed for his death. If you are instead implying that Floyd was at fault or carried some responsibility, he took the drugs without expecting to be placed in such a strenuous situation by a police officer. There are other factors, but yes, the position he was placed in by the police officer was the CAUSE.
