Well… HB1473 passed the house in Tennessee. This bill will likely lead another push to the Supreme Court to overturn obergefell; possibly actually passing the SC this time given it would be brought by a state rather than a private individual. Fuck.

For context: HB1473 is directly combatting the obergefell decision, it insists that private individuals and orgs do not have to recognize same-sex marriages; essentially stripping civil protections in the private sector

They might get rid of it but I’d be surprised if they did. They’re already very unpopular, and as non democratic as this admin is, you need to have SOME of the public on your side.

I've been saying there's a very real chance we lose gay marriage under this administration (or the next if MAGA wins again). No one wants to believe me. It feels like the ultimate power move they've been pushing the envelope towards. The MAGA gays will find a way to excuse it until the very last minute when they have to accept that it's real and they got played. And even then some of them will pretend to be happy with their civil unions or whatever.

Btw idk if this bill is really the right time or if Obergefell will even actually get overturned at the end of the day. But I do feel pretty confident that more of the right wants gay marriage gone than people realize, and there will be a serious push to get rid of it, probably endorsed by Trump himself (though he'll switch up if it fails)

As much as I hate it, I fully agree. The heritage foundation has been planning this for decades, and they’re unfettered Christian nationalists with the goal of pure theocracy.

To branch off from what 2 said, I fear that this may happen regardless of who’s in office, especially given how there’s already “progressive” dems capitulating to people who want to eradicate (or at minimum, ostracize) trans ppl from society I genuinely hate the path we’re on, and I can’t see a way out except from mass revolution (and we know how hard that will be to organize)

That’s why we can’t elect newsom, but even he wouldn’t allow this to come to pass.
