Country as a genre historically had a rebellious and independent streak, pioneered by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and others as the Outlaw Country movement. It was/is very popular and politically progressive, but got overshadowed after 9/11 by stereotypical and jingoistic "bro country." The nice thing is that there's a new wave of country artists that are reclaiming country's outlaw and singer-songwriter roots.
