Apparently Michelangelo’s sketchbook is “explicit content”. Who are you to judge Yikyak… I’ve seen what you allow posted on here. Woe onto you. You have a culture. Art/culture requires a part of the artist + a part of the world to produce works. You don’t have to be prideful about what your ancestors did, but if we are to count their sins, we must also count their virtues and give them credit for the positive things they created as well.

Short answer, it’s not. And also that from the perspective of the US as a colonial model, white people not having cultural identity beyond being white is kind of the point. But I digress. I’d say, if you want to engage more with creating cultural identity for yourself, learning another language and earnestly engaging with the culture it comes from is a fantastic start.

Hey, I’m saltine cracker white and I still have culture. I mean, it’s mostly just being into Irish and Russian mythology and boiled food. But still!

But also I don’t think it’s entirely foolish to care about where your ancestors came from. My 1/10th Irish dna doesn’t make me an Irishmen but it’s still cool to learn about where I came from

So in all seriousness, I would recommend doing some more research into wherever you grew up and wherever your family is from. The idea that white means no culture is really a construct of us having a white-dominated country.

Find some local regional pride. Discover your local heritage crops. You could research the Native American communities from your area and go to a powwow. Read up on the history. And research your family. You could learn an ancestral language, or better educate yourselves on the traditions of your ancestors. Identify what cultural elements were passed on to you. Everyone has unique culture, including white Americans. It’s just that our society makes it seem like “white” is the default.

I kind of went through this crisis for a bit, and that resulted in a period of me trying to over-compensate with my Irish ancestry to try to make myself seem unique. Since then, I have become much more comfortable in “American” being something unique and beautiful. Also nothing gave me more Virginian pride than moving somewhere else in the country lol 🦀🦪
