About 10% of the population was on Medicaid in 2021 and 20% on Medicare for the same year, with about 4% of the population being dually enrolled. It’s already partly socialized for the poor and the elderly. From an economic theory perspective, it depends on each sector. Something like pharmaceutical and surgery technology may see a drop in innovation without patents and competition, but markups to sell to the government (similar to defense) would be more likely if these firms were still private

On the other hand, hospitals would likely be largely unaffected because payrolls would be government-subsidized. If anything, an increase in treatments may lead to an increase in wages paid to hospital staff. The short-run effect would likely be hospital overcrowding and wait-lists due to increased willingness to seek treatment, but it’s nothing we haven’t seen before (COVID)
