The peaceful portion of the civil rights movement worked because there was an armed group willing to back them up.

Also true. I have seen my point get misconstrued—people think the reason that peaceful protests were successful was because leaders went “Okay. Since you asked nicely…” and not that people who were on the fence watching at home went “Hey that’s too far. I’m gonna join the side of the civil rights.” Going limp and being little angels was a contrast to the police brutality
