If we can figure out how to establish universal healthcare without fucking over the people who actually provide it (doctors), I’m all ears. Until then, nobody can say shit. There’s a reason why more doctors across the country are now refusing Medicaid…
This is what it sounds like when you “healthcare is a human right” people debate in favor of universal healthcare. No foresight whatsoever.

Doctors aren’t taking Medicaid anymore largely because they have kept reimbursements low compared to the rate of inflation over the past several years. Insurance is the one that’s benefiting from the system in the first place.

Doctors are already fcked over by insurance companies in the system we have now. Anything they require can be shut down by the insurance company, who refuses to pay for it or delays it until you need new imaging and the whole thing starts over. It’s a disaster.

Oh I’m aware. The system is broken, but I do not think a system like what Canada or England has is the answer at all. The only difference between that and what we have now is doctors would have to work even harder for a lower ROI

Nail on the head. Our system is broken for sure and needs fixing, but the direction Medicaid is heading does not bode well for those who support Government funded healthcare programs.

Well that’s because Medicaid does not really do a good job of being a well run government funded healthcare program, especially when private equity and insurance companies want Medicaid to be significantly limited as possible

It’s the same arguments that a lot of British conservatives will make about the NHS when they’ve been persistently, defending it over the past several decades.

And especially now, how can he even use Medicaid as an example of why government healthcare is not a great solution when it’s going to be gutted in the next several years

It’s a wonderful tactic that conservatives use: let’s completely break the welfare system so that it doesn’t work and we can use that as a justification to privatize everything so our corporate partners can make a nice profit

I agree with you that the insurance companies and admins that have no business being in medicine are the problem. We’ve all seen the statistic where if every doctor worked for free, it would only drop spending by 8%. So that begs the question - where does all of that money go outside of operating costs? Admin and insurance companies. Surely there is a way to divert that extra cash into a single-payer system, but the way Medicaid and the ACA was ran does not give me confidence.

I think something like the way Switzerland does it would be a good start. Just have to make it on a much larger scale, which is a lot easier said than done.

Switzerland isn’t a great example they still spend far too much compared to other nations. And I don’t buy the “we’re a big country argument” ever honestly especially when you can replicate it on a more decentralized approach if you want.

Like people love to use Canada and the UK but there are plenty of other well performing nationalized healthcare systems that spend less and have better outcomes.
