it’s not somehow got… conservatives have always been authoritarian. the whole idea that conservatism is about “small government” has always been BS. conservatism is about defending power and hierarchy. democracy and increased democratization have thus always been their biggest fear. this goes all the way back to the first people to be contemporary called conservatives (the monarchist faction during and after the french revolution) and even the attitudes of the conservative faction in the late
