What’s false about it?

Once a socialist government takes control of everyone’s economic livelihood, it will cease being democratic. It was the thesis of Hayek’s “road to serfdom” and it’s been the case in every truly socialist nation. Those who spoke out against the ruling party in the USSR were forced into less desirable jobs and housing, if they were lucky enough to avoid the gulag.

What about a socialist economic structure precludes it from being governed through democracy?

Because a socialized economy inevitably fuses economic and political power. Once that happens, it will reward loyalty and punish dissent. Without free speech and fair elections there is no democracy.

Why is that inevitable?

People will not give up private ownership voluntarily. The only realistic path to socialism is through a coercive abolition of private property. To do that you need a government with the power to enforce your prohibition. Once that state exists, the people in power will have every incentive to continue its existence.

He literally wrote entire books explaining why fascism is bad.

He literally supported fascist dictatorships in the name of opening up free markets, just like most hacks from the Austrian School.

Theres no honest way that you can claim he was a fascist. But even if he was, it’s irrelevant to the point. The argument stands on its own and is supported by real world evidence.

if you support fascist dictatorships, you’re a fascist. basically all conservatives economists active in the mid 20th century were supportive of fascism as long as it was good for rich people. economics is a farce.
