You’re closer to the democratic platform than you think. Current Republican platform has transformed into an authoritarian nativist argument against all non European Americans. There was a dem bill last year to overhaul the immigration court systems for refugees, give paths to naturalization for people already established here, and strengthen border security while continuing to deport only violent criminals. Completely different from what the main right wing positions are right now.
The nativism arguments being pushed by figures like JD Vance that he is inherently more “American” than me (a second gen and child of immigrants) because his family has been here since the 1800s but that argument goes against the founding values of this country which non maga republicans agree with.
It was the “bipartisan border bill” and it was republicans who struck it down not the Dems. H1B visas have changed since the 90s now they’re basically just temporary work permits and it’s almost impossible to get citizenship anymore from those because it’s dependent on your employment. Most current H1B workers will have to leave as soon as they are fired from their jobs if they can’t get sponsorship from somewhere else. It’s cheaper to hire a new H1B worker than give an existing H1B a raise
