Told my mom “You can’t use the argument that immigrants are taking our jobs bc that’s what they did to your grandma when she came here with the Irish need not apply stuff” and she will not stop insisting that it was completely different then I’m so tired

Honestly just ask her how it was different. It tends to be a very revealing question

Bc saying “oh it was different back then” doesn’t say much. But having to explain how exactly it was different often has people fumbling

Her mentality is essentially “my grandmother came in LEGALLY” (not even entirely true btw based on the fact that she CHANGED HER LAST NAME AT THE MIGRATION DESK 😭)

I just don’t understand why she’s not more sympathetic when our family faced the exact same discrimination that she’s helping perpetuate now

im also of irish descent, my grandma and grandpa on my dads side immigrated here in the 40s/50s. so now my dad says hes "sympathetic" to immigrants, yet he wants to deport everyone EXCEPT elons white south african "refugees"

Also I do believe she thinks there’s an air of truth to it now because the news sources she trusts is telling her it is rather than it coming out of history books.

also i realized you were talking about your mom and not your granny so my first comment is sorta wrong but atp idrc it works enough given her stances

Bahaha it’s fine, yeah I’m 3rd generation I think? but she’s connected to her Irish heritage a lot more than I am. She even used her family heritage to get an Irish citizenship (which you can do apparently??) Which is what surprises me so much about her. Sympathetic to her own plight, but nobody else’s

Also, while not about the Irish, at the same time in the 1800s there were people from China coming to the US in spite of the Chinese exclusion act. A ton of people with Chinese ancestry are here because their ancestors immigrated here illegally. Are we suddenly going to deport every Chinese person?
