Every college student I know is a reactionary left wing voter. I would say you all lack just as much self awareness as the Trump voters do. Too much political tribalism rather than focusing on policy. What was once considered moderate like anti corporate populism has somehow become… right wing? And pro pharma(with the exception of public healthcare) has some become…. Left wing? TL;DR: most people lack any genuine political self awareness whether left leaning or right leaning

The issue with most people, is in their younger life, they meet someone of one party and dislike said person. Then, they grow up hating that party because of that person. Also, people use political parties as an identity and refuse to acknowledge the other parties good side. They ALWAYS vote for their registered party, and never look at the other candidates

The argument you made just isn’t very sound. Might be true for a few but I would never be submitted to changing my party affiliation based off any type of relationship.

That’s just how it is where I’m from and my experience. So, if I were to reword it, I’d say MY MAJORITY of people I’ve met have been like that.

“everyone pursuing higher education is left wing” the thing about education is it makes u smarter. there are plenty of right wing college students its just a smaller percentage because going to school helps you connect the dots! bitch

Eh not really. Education in how it’s delivered, processed, and absorbed is what matters. Fact of the matter is that I’ve noticed that college students often times are incredibly emotionally reactionary just as Trump supporters often are. However, it points to reason that the political solutions of an average college student are only slightly more complex, but offering very little substance nor reasoning for why they believe the way they do. I call this the “Gen Ed” syndrome.

Essentially what I’m saying is this. 1. Colleges are over saturated meaning less true academics but rather more “financial survivalists” going to college for future stability 2. College students that believe themselves politically savvy often fail to express why they believe the things they do. This presents these college students as lacking genuine academic self awareness. (I.e. sapere aude). 3. College students often parrot their professors without the willingness to explore academic…

literature outside of class because once again, college is a means to an end for the general population. Not for intellectualism but for financial stability. 4. Just because someone gets into a good school does not equate genuine critical reasoning. You would have realized this had you questioned your baseline assumption that: “most college students become liberal after college. There are some left wing students. Rational could point to better education. But is this true? Or are there other-

I would agree with this sentiment as reactionism and emotion have become more tied into politics over the recent years. Young student has complex experiences with someone of certain political ideology. Some of the flaws of said ideology are exposed. Therefore subconscious surface level reasoning that said political leaning = discomfort

1) “true academic” is a nonsense term. focusing on education for any reason sharpens your brain and makes you mentally tougher, akin to physical strength due to weight training. 2) in my experience ive only seen conservatives fail to express the intention behind their beliefs so your point is not specific to leftists or college students 3) the entire point of academia is to digest and challenge your superiors and professors. your dogmatic ass argument is based on assumptions you have made

your claims are baseless and i dont trust you so why would i care what you have to say? youve cited your reasoning as “in my experience” or have made just as many general claims as “most people who go to college are leftist” which is true at least look at a polling map and notice which counties hold universities

1) so with your logic a “re-education camp” also sharpens one’s brain because they are fed more information? Also not really. Reading I guess but not if you engage with material outside of what is presented to you. The brain is a muscle in the sense of actively participating in cognitive awareness just reading a book and taking tests. That doesn’t really educate anyone outside of believing what they’re told. 2) anecdotal fallacy. You’re proving my point.

2) im not proving your point im showing you the irony in what you say. my anecdotal evidence is the same as yours so we cant rely on it at all and should be disregarded

Mm. The only rebuttal I would have is that not all education is useful in today’s world. Studying something fashion isn’t really sharpening your mind

3) the point of academia for most is to get a degree so that they can get a job and make money because that’s what they were told they needed to do to survive. Not because academia is truly academic anymore. Most universities have become fast food. Pushing out degrees like hot cakes. I would argue doctorate programs have become the modern seal of a genuine academic as most people that go for those only do so because they want to not because they were told to do it.

You don’t need to trust me. But why are you citing reasonings such as “in my experience” which are not statements I made but rather yourself. As you said earlier “2) in my experience I’ve only seen conservatives fail to express their intention…”. Also why would you even bother being up general claims as a negative such as “most people who go to college are leftist” which you yourself asserted as true directly afterwards. Also you are once again conflating cause to correlation.

I am in school. I’m an honors student who will be graduating with an honors diploma. I engage with academics outside of class because I find it genuinely fun. I chose a field like politics because “the game” as they often refer to it, is interesting. What I am simply asserting is that you are not an academic and that’s okay. But it’s ironic because you’ve used academics as some sort of “dick measuring contest” to bolster your own ego. Not only is that unacademic, it’s vulgarian

I didn’t use anecdotal evidence. I made a statement based on a hypothesis. Yes I did not exactly use evidence specifically due to word count issues. However I would consider that less of a sin compared to making a logical fallacy whilst claiming academic and intellectual “superiority”

You’re misrepresenting my argument. My argument was not about dick measuring but about how academics ≠ improved political literacy for most people. So although politics have shifted it could be reasoned that it’s not due to genuine understanding but academic parroting due to appeal to authority.
