It’s crazy how most Americans will accept that the soviets collapsed due to military overspending from competition and then will turn around and vote to spend more than every country in the world COMBINED rather than invest in our economy or people

The USSR was spending ~15% of GDP on the military. We currently spend 3.4%. You can still argue that we spend too much (and I do) but it’s not the same. Also, the idea that defense spending was the only reason the USSR collapsed is simply not true.

But also, we’ve maintained an increased level of military spending for decades now, they might have spent more than us in the moment, but we’ve consistently been spending too much for decades. It’s unsustainable and will also contribute to a collapse. And obviously it’s not the sole reason, but when you’re building bombs instead of feeding, educating, and housing your civilians for decades, it tends to be a significant factor
