Heard an interesting political litmus test the other day, personally I’m in the #2 camp. Food stamps should be:
#poll
1. Usable on anything edible
2. Not usable on Mt. Dew
3. Not a thing/heavily limited

I do see your point, I really do, but people on food stamps deserve a soda every once in a while. Imagine being a child in elementary school and being the only kid on the playground that hasn’t tasted soda, ice cream, or had a birthday cake.

Oh I completely agree, but where we might differ slightly is that the assistance/lifeboat afforded by food stamps to take care of necessities should ideally allow people to use what little money they do have to afford nice things like that. Obviously this gets complicated either in extreme edge cases or when considering the general reality of a fucked up economy and unlivable minimum wage, I’d say my question leans more on theoretical politics than immediately actionable stuff.

I think a good compromise would be the addition of an additional amount that’s allowed for anything edible, which is smaller and separate from their main allocation of welfare, which has more rules

But in most cases, unless there is an extreme outlier issue like I mentioned, someone who has government assistance for necessities that is unable to buy the occasional soda for their kid for $1.99 indicates something beyond unfortunate circumstances

I like that, it would also help kids in those families to understand moderation and nutrition (childhood obesity is absolutely fucked and needs serious intervention)

Yes, mostly I’m just thinking of allowing for occasional mental pick me ups, or special occasions, like getting a cake for a birthday
