(I want to preface this isn’t a defense or me condoning it, js explaining it) In-group out-group psychology is a very fundamental part of human psychology. We’re very good at recognizing patterns quickly, and our brains evolved to notice disruptions in those patterns quickly as a sign of potential danger. Socially, this evolves into seeing others from a different group (such as a different tribe), could mean danger. The less someone looks/acts like you presumptively expect…

… the more warning signs your brain gives off. In effect, this makes people naturally act aggressively/defensively bc of all the shit your brain/nervous system is doing. Practically I am saying: bigotry is literally caveman brained and who someone hates is someone they consider to be a different group than them. There is some good news tho, this often means that gaining trust and personally becoming part of someone’s in group can meaningfully change their hearts.

That is something I’ve learned most transphobes I’ve met have never met a trans person till they meet me, and when I show kindness they stop being as bigoted

But what that also tells me is bigotry equals stupidity to hate someone for simply being different is idiotic

Ignorance Id say over stupidity, it’s an illogical conclusion but it’s one the brain forces on us with minimal information/understanding

Yeah it’s crazy how much getting someone’s trust can do for their perception of the world. There’s a famous story, I forget the exact details but a black man befriended either the leader or someone very high up in the KKK over phone or by letters, and once they met in person and the guy realized his close friend was someone he supposedly should hate, he left the KKK and became pretty vocal against his former views
