For those who use Florida State as an example of indigenous being okay with the names here’s the thing. They have approval and support of the Seminole of Florida who are the few who remain. The much larger Seminole live in Oklahoma and don’t support it.

Also a potential conflict of interest from the wiki article: “Critics have noted a political undercurrent in the support from Florida Seminole leaders, who are heavily involved in business ventures such as Indian casinos in the state.[4]”

FSU literally supports the Seminole tribe financially and offers their children scholarships to their school and you’re still whining

So I’m gonna repeat this and actually try and understand what I’m saying this time actually try and comprehend history. There are 2 groups of the Seminole. The Florida Seminole and the Oklahoma Seminole. The Florida Seminole are very small as they’re the few who were able to avoid the Trail of Tears. The Oklahoma Seminole are far larger because they were the victims of the federal government. The far larger group does not get the support nor do they approve.

It’s the same tribe. One group was moved to Oklahoma and the other is the ones who avoided being forcefully moved

It’s not some other tribe they’re the same nation but have to live differently because the vast majority weren’t able to escape the forced movement in the trail of tears. And that majority of the same group don’t get any benefits from the school they’re completely excluded even though they’re the same people. It’s funny how people like you can say “dumbass” so strongly when you’re so wrong objectively.

Well you said “some other tribe” when that’s not the case. Their ancestors were all from Florida, and during the trail of tears many were taken to Oklahoma. They’re two separate groups now, but are the same tribe and have shared ancestry

Your point is invalid because they’re not 2 separate tribes. It’s just one side (the small minority) get all the benefits and are the one’s okay with it while the majority are ignored and get no support.

Also, some members of the group in Florida say that they disagree with the leadership, so it’s a bit of a complex issue

Because the clear majority are opposed to it. You don’t actually care about justice for the indigenous people or their thoughts you just want things to never change.

I really can’t pick a side here because the issue is complex and it sounds like there are a lot of views and potential conflicts of interest. If it was my culture personally, idk if I’d want a tomahawk chop to be the way it’s sustained

I mean if FSU wants to actually start delivering support to all of the Seminole people maybe there’ll be some good will. Right now FSU uses a few people getting support to show themselves as just and righting historical wrongs leading to them having a good relationship with the entire nation. When in all reality they deny that righting of wrongs and say look at the few we’re helping and those in that group who support our mascot to say that all the nation supports it. People like you erase 1/2

And speak on the behalf of the majority of Seminole who are still denied the righting of historical wrongs and are seen being used as mascots while being ignored. Also fuck out of here with tyranny of the majority it’s not for you to get a say on whose voices matter more.

Pretty sure the point of democracy is to give the governed the right to decide on certain governmental matters.

That’s the point of a constitution

I’m still waiting on that conspiracy theory man. Also using the constitution in a discussion about an indigenous nation and their history and relationship with a mascot and historical injustice is pretty fucking off topic my dude. I don’t care about “tyranny of the majority” I care about Indigenous nations receiving justice and having their voices heard. People like you don’t give a fuck about hearing their voices you just want to hear what you agree with.
