But it doesn’t just happen all the time, it happens literally every time. Pointing to the United States as the worst offender feels hypocritical. We’re never going to give the land back, and we aren’t going to ever be able to “make up” for it, so why bother with this moral self-flagellation?
imo, with the united states. i agree that what’s done is done—we can’t necessarily “give the land back” because it’s not like everyone is going to just up and leave. but that doesn’t mean we have to ignore the past. i think it’s important to remember our past crimes, it makes us mindful. and even though we can’t undo what’s been done, we might be able to make some things better. like land reservations and restoration and self governing treaties and other stuff. imo, we don’t have to put—
I understand being like “breaking treaties isn’t good.” But I didn’t break those treaties, either. In addition to the US being the winner, it happened over 100 years ago. The people whose land was conquered are dead, and the conquerors are dead too. I also hate that I’m expected to show penance for this? I literally don’t care. What happened happened
nobody is asking you to yourself admit to fault. of course you didn’t do anything. i didn’t do anything either, but i’m just saying i don’t think it’s wrong to acknowledge that our country has done wrong in the past. and as far as giving back, it’s not like anyone is asking you to go plant a thousand trees. the government has so much money that they’re spending on the wrong things instead of spending on the american people and our country, which includes native americans and the land.
But even then - we should give more money to the natives? For what? Because they lost a war 120+ years ago? They literally live on dedicated reservations where state laws don’t apply, they’ve built casinos, etc, and got 32 billion in 2024. We’ve been paying “restitution” for long enough
"conquered" what a joke. the majority of indigenous americans were wiped out by the nasty diseases and viruses europeans have been swapping around for centuries. natives had no immunity because they had superior hygiene (having to teach many of the colonists how to bathe and make soaps)
