Yeah, but owning a home should at least give you some control. It’s very unfair for people who have already paid off their homes to have their property taxes raised and they have to move again.

Do you understand what property waxes are for? They are used to support the municipality, whether that be for facilities like water and waste disposal, schooling, or other city functions. Taxes go up because the cost of those services rise over time. Regardless of whether or not you own your home you benefit from municipal functions so it would be kinda unfair to not have to pay as much in tax simply because you don’t also pay a mortgage.

I know very well what they are for but you could just make higher sales taxes instead. Property taxes are not the only source of income.

That’s not at all how it works. People who paid off their houses financed 30 years ago when they were still cheap. In some cases, the property taxes is higher than the actual mortgage. Our generation complains about housing enough as it is and we shouldn’t make it more expensive. If you lived in a place where the home values have tripled over the last 15 years, maybe you’d understand that pain of the tax hikes.

Your house is also worth a lot more if the values have risen that much. You don’t get to have expensive assets and not pay your fair share for them 😂
