Less and less parents are reading to their kids and this is gonna lead to some super troubling shit down the line in terms of education. Sadly Gen Z has a good chunk of blame for this.

Unfortunately is like the most niche take of the over-arching problem. Arguably one of the largest problems in this country: parents not raising there kids at all or with no good faith effort

my mom reading to me as a kid is one of my fondest memories. she started doing so when she realized i was struggling to read in kindergarten. by first grade i was the best reader in the grade. by fourth grade i had a college reading level and finished novels all the time. the fact that kids now won’t get to experience being read to and being able to read is so sad

i feel like that’s mostly millennials, they literally birthed the ipad kids. most of gen z isn’t old enough to be having kids yet

How is that supposed to work when the kid can’t read the name of the app they’re supposed to open

Literally the only alternative is to have the ai read to them and that would mean that instead of the baby bonding with both parents it would be forming emotional bonds to ai which I’m pretty sure has been discussed ad nauseam why that’s a bad idea.

Literally seeing that play out rn between the Kendra psychiatrist thing and OpenAI realizing how many people formed connections with 4o and didn’t expect 5 to change so significantly

Gen Z started in about 1997 ended about 2012/2013. They did a study in 2012 that found about 64% of their parents read to their kids. Recently they did the study again now with 41% of parents reading to their kids. Gen Z compared to Gen X had wildly different views on Fewer than half of gen Z parents called reading to their children fun for me almost one in three saw reading as more of a subject to learn than something to be enjoyed – significantly more than Gen Xers in the study.
