I would like hate speech to be illegal if it was only actually applied to hate speech. But I do not believe the government can be trusted to only legislate hate speech. They’d probably say criticizing Christianity is anti-Christian hate speech and criticizing Israel is antisemitic hate speech and criticizing white supremacy is anti-white hate speech.

Criminalizing any type of speech is a slippery slope. The government can very quickly declare any speech they don’t like as hate speech. Freedom of Speech includes speech we don’t like. Stochastic terrorism absolutely does cause violence but I think it would be very difficult to pinpoint the scope of what to criminalize.
