i think it’s like every other addiction. a ban outright would cause a ton of problems, it comes out to the individual to be able to moderate their use and also consume it ethically, such as (and ik ppl hate this) paying for porn with producers that treat their workers fairly. you just have to be mindful of how it’s consumed, an outright ban opens up a huge can of worms
Yeah no kidding. There is a reason most colleges and universities refuse to study or fund any kind of research about pornography anymore and it’s because so many hundreds of studies have been done and all of them showed it to be harmful on all sides, the people making it, watching it, in relationships with people watching it, etc. and it’s greatly attributed to the insane rise of human trafficking and assaults that are posted consistently on those forms.
Idk I feel like a lot of the people talking about how bad it is for relationships or only had negative effects might be speaking for themselves. Maybe it’s bad for your relationship or has a negative impact on you but I think it’s wild to think that’s true of all or even most people. I imagine it’s like anything else if you have an addictive personality or struggle with addiction then yeah you might become addicted but that’s not everyone or even most people.
The biggest issue is of course the distribution of it and the making of it. It’s extremely extremely unethical and people don’t want to regulate it or change anything about it. The argument is always “yeah BUT what about (obscure thing that realistically isn’t the majority or legally enforceable)” or acting like most films and videos they watch aren’t actively exploiting people when it’s almost guaranteed
When it comes to fake characters and stories or individual people, knock yourselves out. Is it healthy for you? Most likely not. But it is your own health and just like any substance like cigarettes and alcohol, it’s your choice to indulge in them and how to handle it if you form an addiction.
For people who want to consume porn but in a way that isn’t encouraging/indulging in abuse: look up “ethical consumption of pornography” and you’ll find out how to help avoid cites that commonly have filmed abuse or exploitative practices (pornhub needs to be avoided 100%) and how to spot warning flags in the things you’re consuming
