Hot take: majority of people who want porn banned are just projecting their own issues onto other people. Wouldn't be surprised if a lot of them had crazy porn addictions

refrigerated take, there are both right and left wing arguments against porn

Not all porn is bad. Hand drawn porn made by artists is victimless. But yeah the porn industry is terrible and uses and abuses a bunch of people who do not want to be a part of it.

i think it’s like every other addiction. a ban outright would cause a ton of problems, it comes out to the individual to be able to moderate their use and also consume it ethically, such as (and ik ppl hate this) paying for porn with producers that treat their workers fairly. you just have to be mindful of how it’s consumed, an outright ban opens up a huge can of worms

Yeah no kidding. There is a reason most colleges and universities refuse to study or fund any kind of research about pornography anymore and it’s because so many hundreds of studies have been done and all of them showed it to be harmful on all sides, the people making it, watching it, in relationships with people watching it, etc. and it’s greatly attributed to the insane rise of human trafficking and assaults that are posted consistently on those forms.

I mean, not inherently. Anything can be bad if you aren’t having it in moderation.

Idk I feel like a lot of the people talking about how bad it is for relationships or only had negative effects might be speaking for themselves. Maybe it’s bad for your relationship or has a negative impact on you but I think it’s wild to think that’s true of all or even most people. I imagine it’s like anything else if you have an addictive personality or struggle with addiction then yeah you might become addicted but that’s not everyone or even most people.

I fully agree with this. The porn industry is terrible and messed up, but porn as a concept is not a bad thing. In fact, its presence in a society helps reduce sexual abuse

I’m not huge on wanting it to be banned outright but if it were all to hypothetically disappear tomorrow the world would be improved I probably watch it once every or every other month but would be completely fine if it weren’t accessible anymore

… I don’t know if it would be improved? I mean if all porn vanished tomorrow, sex crimes would certainly increase, assuming my data is up to date. That feels like a bad thing imo

I get what you’re saying but a great deal of serial killers were worsened by compulsive consumption of violent porn, it’s not necessarily a zero sum game

i mean it’s the same as any drug. is it realistic to ban heroin? no. would it be a good thing if absolutely nobody used heroin? yes. obviously there’s nuance like mushy mentioned but for the average person porn has only negative effects.

I think it’s also a better and more viable solution to produce and have porn that is maybe “less exploitative” be more accessible, so when people do seek it out they aren’t ‘forced’ to resort to the scary underground shit

Although I do believe in trying to make sure far more porn is made ethically. A lot of studios suck & abuse talent especially women talent & young un established women have it worst of all which is obviously bad & unexpectable

Adult consumption of pornography has never really been all that taboo, the main issues most people have with it are that it’s easier than ever for kids to see it and get in their pubescent minds that that’s what sex is and should be like

The biggest issue is of course the distribution of it and the making of it. It’s extremely extremely unethical and people don’t want to regulate it or change anything about it. The argument is always “yeah BUT what about (obscure thing that realistically isn’t the majority or legally enforceable)” or acting like most films and videos they watch aren’t actively exploiting people when it’s almost guaranteed

If it’s not an individual person filming and making everything themselves and you are paying for their content or drawing/reading/acted out audio, then it’s 9 times out of 10 exploitative, abusive, unethical, or dangerous in some way.

When it comes to fake characters and stories or individual people, knock yourselves out. Is it healthy for you? Most likely not. But it is your own health and just like any substance like cigarettes and alcohol, it’s your choice to indulge in them and how to handle it if you form an addiction.

For people who want to consume porn but in a way that isn’t encouraging/indulging in abuse: look up “ethical consumption of pornography” and you’ll find out how to help avoid cites that commonly have filmed abuse or exploitative practices (pornhub needs to be avoided 100%) and how to spot warning flags in the things you’re consuming

It’s of course better to avoid it all together but I know it’s not a realistic ask
