Fraternities are hilarious because what do you mean you pay for a friend subscription

More like a party subscription tbh friend subscription is just buying weed

Hate to defend fraternities, but it’s more like a party subscription

Party subscription. Meal subscription. House subscription. It’s the same for both

Your “friends” would stop hanging out with you if you stopped smoking weed?

?? Every single one does at my school. Your dues go to meals and rent if you choose to live there and using the house as a common space to study and hang out

Interesting. All frat guys I’ve spoken to at two different universities have said that you have to pay extra to live in the house and that nobody pays for your three meals a day, you might get a few meals a week but I’ve not heard people having all their food paid for.

Yeah you pay more if you’re living there. You gotta have a lease lol. And yeah every sorority and fraternity here does breakfast lunch and dinner every weekday included in dues. Even covers lunch or dinner twice a week for a guest.

So dues don’t pay for your rent. What school do you go to? That’s crazy. I’ve not heard of that.

They do if you choose that plan? You have to be in the “in-house member” dues cycle or whatever. There’s different dues for “in-house” “out-of-house” and “first year” members

Regardless, when I said house subscription I wasn’t even talking about living there. I was talking about using the house as a common area like a library.

How is that different than just being in the frat/sorority and also having to pay rent. To me the only difference is that it’s on one bill instead of two.

It’s just an optional benefit of the frat/sorority

How can you call it a benefit when you literally just pay more?

Anonymous replying to -> OP 5w

Think you typically pay less than you would otherwise for rent because of the people who don't live there paying dues

The option of living in a nice house on campus vs off campus apartments is a benefit depending on what you want. And it’s usually cheaper than any off campus apartment options from what I’ve seen.

Just had one of my friends that’s a property manager for a sorority send me a breakdown explanation of their dues and this is what she sent. Hopefully helpful

She said only like $116 of all of that goes towards just being in the sorority where you could consider it “paying for friends”. But tbh I really don’t see the difference between paying to be in a sorority vs paying to be in any other club. I pay to be in an art club 🤷

You don’t pay for insurance and use of common space* in clubs usually. *you could consider that part of the expenses in some cases

They don’t give me a breakdown on my art club dues but if I had to guess what they actually go to then I’d assume probably having studio hours for people to come in and use the studio space and then idk sometimes they have pizza or something so probably that. I just feel like it’s basically the same thing except like 25x larger scale cuz art club is like 20 people and these sororities are like 500 with hella more expenses and stuff they do

Yeah I’m a big supporter of clubs. Social fraternities/sororities I will always view as a friend subscription. Yeah they do some events but so do clubs at a much cheaper expense. The only tangible argument that could be made is if you argue that networking is easier in a frat/sorority.
