In the most economically free (aka most capitalist) countries

Couple of problems with that graph. First, what is economic freedom being defined as here? Everyone has a different definition. Second, this says nothing about reduction (ya know, the thing we’re talking about), only share.

1. It uses the Fraser Institute’s economic freedom index. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_Freedom_of_the_World?utm_source=perplexity
2. Prevalence and reduction are almost identical given that nearly the entire world lived in extreme poverty.

I genuinely do not understand what you mean when you say that prevalence and reduction are almost identical

If nearly the entire population starts out in extreme poverty, the countries that have the least extreme poverty will also be the ones that reduced extreme poverty the most

That assumes an equal starting point, which just doesn’t stand up to any scrutiny whatsoever. The answer to the question of where the most poverty reduction took place is China btw, pulling hundreds of millions of people out of poverty will tend to do that.

It assumes that nearly everyone was in extreme poverty, which is true. See the graph.
The reason China was so poor, was largely because of the Great Leap Forward. They only reduced poverty when they privatized most of their economy.
