absolutely all fair points. while they don’t have to be cops it’s kind of an impossible ask to have them all quit if they disagree with their orders. especially in this economy. i also can’t think of what a previous cop would do as a different job and make similar money (differs based on the area ofc but city cops make good money) especially if they’ve been doing it a long time. it will be hard to find another position that competes with the salary and benefits of being an officer.

I live in NJ and I hate the fact that I’ve seen some news of our state police tear gassing and flash banging peaceful protesters, but I do think this will at least prevent some of the violence that would have come from those ICE fucks itching to escalate things. Going to keep contacting my governor, but until they find legal ways to litigate and shut down Delaney (i.e. for refusing health inspections, governor’s entry), this is probably the safest option. Similar to what happened with Whipple

i could be wrong but i’m pretty sure the cops don’t get to choose to do this. they’re kinda forced to, so it doesn’t mean they (as a whole or even individuals) support what’s going on here. they are just doing their job, which from what i read in the article, is to keep the peace during these protests and protect all civilians and agents from harm. no matter what your political stance is on ICE or immigration, i don’t see how the NJPD cops are the problem here.

You’re correct in that they don’t have a choice as long as they’re still cops (which they don’t have to be) but to say they’re “protecting the peace” is slightly misleading. They’re there to protect federal property, not the protesters, not the people inside the prison, just the federal property. My problem is that by “doing their jobs” they’re supporting ICE and what they do, “just following orders” didn’t work for the Nazis and it won’t work for anyone that assists in the crimes ICE commits

secondly, the article specifically talks about making a safe area for the protesters and that they will be moving them there for their safety. so i don’t really understand how that means they aren’t there for their safety people but just the property. i don’t know about you but ive worked around big city cops and majority of them do what they do because they genuinely care about serving the people in their communities. i feel like we’ve all forgotten something important 1/2

is that being a cop and choosing to put yourself in dangerous situations (like protests for example) is a huge ask and no one who really didn’t care about protecting people would risk harm to themselves for people they don’t know and don’t care about. i worded it kind of poorly but hopefully it makes sense what im saying.

last comment i want to make on your reply (because im not going to get into our opinions on ICE in particular) is that the police CANT protect or do anything about the people being detained. it’s a federal property and therefore not in their jurisdiction. however if that building where to be threatened with a bomb and the feds sent the local bomb squad. i have no doubts that most cops wouldn’t argue about saving people’s lives.
