Literally. Everyone called it “football” in the 1800s. Then pretentious rich Brits wanted to rename clubs after “associations”, so called em “soccers”. Americans were like “fuck it” then called it soccer. Then in the 60s pretentious Brit’s said soccer was too “American” and changed it back.
