Prison justice advocates have been saying for a long time we’re re-entering the “tough on youth crime” era that does NOTHING to fix the issue. The whole point of juvenile justice is to rehabilitate youth, locking them up in solitary (which adult facilities are legally required to do because of the Sight and Sound mandate) only worsens the issue

Early intervention programs, youth and family support systems and rehabilitation would do so much more then longer sentences

Also it’s been studied an proven that they grow out of these behaviors by time they reach adult but do need intervention from a parental authority figure to help rehabilitate and to criminalize them statistically makes them more likely to do worse in the future

I hate the guy but, if you choose to murder someone at 14 years old then you probably need more than an intervention program and others probably will not feel safe with you freely walking around

Killers should get the death penalty regardless of age - the 14th Amendment

The difference between choosing to kill someone (punishment jail time interventions moot) and stupidly getting mixed up without understanding the very real consequences of gun violence, in which case locking those kids up for life doesn’t fix the issue alone. It gets one mixed up kid off the street and the cycle perpetuates bc the root problems are not them and their murdurous mindset, it’s the environments their surrounded in and the normal cycles of violence they’re being exposed to

I’m getting downvoted for some reason but I’m right lmfao. This is a classic right wing fear mongering tactic to feed the for profit carceral system and justify state violence.

Like a lot of the comments here, while well intentioned and rightfully pointing out that the carceral system doesn’t work to prevent violent crime, are engaging with Trumps post as if his assertions about DC streets teeming with gangs of violent children are true, when they simply aren’t. Violent crime is at a record low nationally and that inc DC
