The House GOP is refusing to reconvene because the final vote to release the Epstein Files is locked and they’re stalling to stop it. They won’t swear in Adelita Grijalva. They shut down the government. All to bury the truth.

I think the resolution still would have to pass the senate in order to actually do anything, but this would put all house members on record as to whether they voted to release or not

The Epstein files are quite literally the deep state they will never be released

Why don’t the house democrats just hold a session themselves and swear her in? One party has thrown all the rules out the window, why does the other party have to abide by the obstruction?

Why do y’all care about the Epstein files, Epstein was rich and deserved exotic goods

Well. They won't swear her in early. Johnson says she can be sworn in when the house comes back into session. Senate democrats shut down the govt more than anyone else. Not sure the stupid epstein files have much to do with it.

They could have sworn her in at the last pro forma session. They had republicans sworn in within 24 hr and the results weren’t even certified 💀

I've been obsessed with the filibuster since Obama. I'm old. 60 votes to pass most legislation in a body where the members are already equally apportioned (each state gets 2 senators whether you're new york or nebraska) is an impossibly high bar. They either have to cooperate or it's paralyzed. The idea of cooperation is nice. Obama tried it. Biden tried it. But there are major problems getting way worse because congress barely functions.

Yeah. In theory they could with their majority. I'm guessing several members don't want to do it. They would take a lot of flak but then they could have passed whatever they wanted and not have shutdowns like this

Right. Then they should have made any effort at all of negotiating and compromise. They aren’t interested. They shut down the government. They own it.

The speaker has to swear her in but ngl I wonder if we’ve gotten to the point where we have to tell the parliamentarian he’s refusing to swear her in 💀 really in uncharted territory here I guess

I don't think you just release random legal and police files to the public, to a lynch mob, and let every crazy person out there have at it. Prosecutors make decisions about whether pr not charges are warranted. You would have mobs of people seizing on names in there even if those ppl, were never criminally suspect in any way. This idea that there is some network of child sex predators was always a figment of the conspiracy theorists' imaginations. I bet the truth is boring. Nothing as juicy as

MTG wants them to get rid of it so they can reopen the gov, but she also has a much more sinister angle: getting basically all of project 2025 done through legislation, which would make it much harder to overturn or repeal later

Trump’s “Democrat shut down” narrative probably would’ve worked better if he didn’t cancel the first meeting with Dem leaders and tell the republicans not to talk to them 💀 there are apparently some back channel negotiations with Jeanne Shaheen though

Pedophilia refers to an attraction to prepubescent children, not teenagers. It's actually psychologically normal to be attracted to teens though clearly illegal for an adult of his age to do that with anyone under 18.

I'm stating facts. I said what he did was clearly illegal. Your moral condemnation of him doesn't justify calling him things he wasn't like a pedophile. People are throwing around the term pedophile for its shock value. He was a sex offender but not a pedophile.

I mean it’s a little sleazy by the reps but they technically are in the right atm. The votes haven’t been “certified” by Arizona so she can’t officially take office that’s why they didn’t swear her in. Ofc the Epstein files are a big part of that. Fortunately the reps have zero power since they need to pull the Dems over for the shutdown to end and it seems like the Dems aren’t spineless for once

A judge in Florida unsealed a ton of them a year or two ago because he felt it was in the public interest. Considering Epstein got a non-prosecution agreement and was only sentenced to 18 months (served 13) in jail, this case is absolutely odd
