In the current state we are in people with opposing political views can’t be friends. Because unfortunately, if you are on the right, it’s no longer just that we disagree- you are actively supporting the justification of my rights being revoked.

People join particular sides for a variety of reasons, do not subscribe to all ideals nor support every member. If you want to blanket people go ahead, but it doesn’t convince anyone that you have credibility in what you say.

I’m gay and liberal and my best friend is a straight guy who’s extremely republican and thinks gay marriage should be overturned and honestly I don’t give 2 fucks he’s still a chill guy who respects me as a person

At the end of the day I just don’t care about people’s beliefs, like I pick my friends based on their qualities of their personality and who they are as a person. If you pick your friends based on what they believe doesn’t that just kind of turn your friendship into an echo chamber?

I picked my friend based on their qualities and based on their actual care for me. I wouldn’t really be friends with somebody who was actively voting against me getting married to someone who makes me happy… I feel like that’s not a crazy take

I mean yeah I guess I understand that, but it’s just not something I care about. My friend and I are extremely close and some of my best memories are times that I’ve spent with him. Don’t you wonder what you could be missing out on?

And that’s completely OK! I have a lot of family that are on the right and realistically speaking if we were not related, I would not be talking to them because they are actively voting against something simply because they do not understand which is a kind of ignorance that I do not have the privilege to express.

That’s a strawman argument. There’s a difference between having opposing political beliefs and being a Nazi

Is nazism not an opposing political belief from what’s considered progressive and left?

Being a nazi is an opposing political belief- But that wasn’t even what I was originally trying to get at. I’m simply stating I can’t really be friends with somebody who actively doesnt support me simply because they don’t understand.

They didn’t say it was the only opposing belief, it was an example. Your usage of the term “straw man argument” simply doesn’t stand.

Saying that you’d be friends with someone with differing political views isn’t the same as saying you’d be friends with a Nazi, like what😭 That’s like me saying “I don’t like eating cookies” and you saying “so you like eating rocks”

They’re not saying it’s the only differing political view. Its simply one of them. You cant be friends with a nazi = not being friends with someone with an opposing view. and of course the right isnt as extreme but its also a political view i wouldnt befriend.

I just don’t know why you’d feel the need to justify being friends with people who want less right for others. That’s what the nazis did; just more of it. They were also staunchly anti gay marriage. It doesn’t bother you that your friend holds the same belief legally as the nazis did when they first got to power?

So removing rights to weapons is equivalent to removing rights to healthcare, marriage and freedom of speech? I just looked through your sources and quite frankly the rights that are being argued upon aren’t solely the left. Because unfortunately the rights I’ve stated are solely something most of the right stands against, and those who don’t stand for it are ignorant for being part of party that does.
