I am someone who is highly critical of both religions. If we are being honest and look historically, Islam was actually significantly more tolerant of minority religions than Christianity was. They were both absolutely brutal especially towards pagans, but Islam has scriptural protections for those deemed “people of the book.”
Because of this, Islam marginalized but generally permitted the existence of pre-existing Jewish, Christian, Zoroastrian, and later even Samaritan, Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain faith communities. Meanwhile under Christianity if you weren’t the exact right religion you were a heathen to be eradicated.
The only reason we view this differently in the modern day is that there has been a rapid switch in terms of tolerance. The Christian world rapidly became much more tolerant of minority religions than it once was, and the impacts of western imperialism resulted in a surge in fundamentalist Islam persecuting other faiths.
