One of these is an actual slur used against actual people for the purposes of actual discrimination, and one is a funny insulting word for a robot from a Star Wars cartoon lots of us grew up on. Get a grip. The comparison is honestly insulting and undermines the historical power of the actual n-word by implying that making fun of cold unfeeling machines with a fictional slur is remotely comparable to real oppression of flesh and blood people. Ridiculous.

yes it is? it’s literally just a new variation of “gamer is our word” and so on. i’m aware it’s from star wars but the way people are using it is in line with a long standing joke that is basically just treating any other -er word as a slur.

white people online are absolutely using it in a racist way. i’m not saying clanker is literally a slur, i’ve seen TCW. the point is that most of the jokes people are making are literally just racist jokes that use the n word but you replace it with clanker and the black person with a droid. like about not wanting your daughter to bring home a “dirty clanker” and so on. i’m not saying it’s bad because it’s mean to the fucking droids jesus christ 😭

I mean I don’t find those particular instances of it all that funny, and yeah I think those are racist memes, I don’t think that’s EVERY use of the extremely widespread joke. This post in particular doesn’t evoke any well-known racist tropes. If it WAS a “daughter bringing home a clanker” post then yeah I’d agree with your original comment. But I think everyone needs to be anti-AI as hell rn and am therefore not gonna be like “don’t use the clanker meme at all”

Racists love to shitpost, but I don’t think we should cede the entire realm of shitposting to them. If the joke is clearly just racism with a replaced word, then yeah that’s bad, but seeing a TCW clip of Heavy mowing down droids under a caption like “mfw the cops get Boston Dynamics clankers” is gonna make me giggle
