Technically they’re a tax on businesses that import materials and products, which is 1000x worse

Yes. Anyone doubting this, I have a fun experiment. Fill out a customs form on the USPS website to send something internationally. You will see an estimated grounded cost that the recipient pays. It is the taxes/tariffs their country has imposed on an imported good/the US.
