Lowkey this is why I have a theory that oil companies lobbied for the war, so they’d have a convenient excuse to do this bs

There’s a bigger (yet airline-specific) thing going on here which makes this click into place. The Big 3 (American, Delta, and United) aren’t suffering rn. Even though fares have risen, they’re not seeing an issue, because their clientele are at/near the top of the K: business travelers (i.e. not paying for their own flights), people who travel internationally, and wealthier people

If they can get away with charging higher, why bother lowering them?

If he lowers costs, won’t the board just fire him and find a replacement who’ll keep maximizing profits

In general, US airlines are in a tough position because they don’t hedge fuel prices anymore (the transaction fees for these futures contracts got higher, so they went back to just raising prices or adding fuel surcharges). TIL Delta actually has their own refinery lmao, but the other two are somewhat screwed, because most jet fuel is refined in the Middle East https://www.npr.org/2026/03/27/nx-s1-5759203/fuel-hedging-once-kept-airline-prices-down-now-passengers-bear-the-brunt

My conspiracy theory is the US LNG industry lobbied for this (I have no evidence, and it seems like many didn’t expect Iran’s crash out). Europe and Asia get a significant amount of LNG from the Middle East, and with QatarEnergy needing 3 (possibly 5) years to get back up to the production levels they had before, cheap and plentiful US LNG suddenly looks very appealing
