Seeing normie commentary on AI seriously makes me fearful about the future. We are well beyond the point where the masses can even comprehend the issues at hand let alone make wise policy decisions regarding them

Ohh let us in on your high level thinking then … I’ll try my best to keep up with it using my stupid little normie mind

I’m just curious what the high level dialogue is! Can we hear some of it?

What’s the issue at hand that the masses can’t comprehend but you can?

What happens to the world when the methods to make sophisticated weaponry are in the hands of everybody? What are the economic repercussions of a technology that can generalize to so many human tasks? What happens when the forces available to the masses, and the velocity with which they become more powerful, vastly outpaces the rate at which we can properly regulate it? I mean there’s a lot of questions that frankly I don’t think the median American is nearly equipped to answer

My point is that I think most Americans have some kinda grasp of at the very least the job replacement point, and many young people get the other points too. Although I do think you’re correct somewhat, our legislators (old asf) are the ones who really don’t get it

I’m sorry if I’m being rude but like, what I’m saying is that I don’t think most Americans are fully considering the implications. They might get at a rudimentary level like “AI can automate some people” but if you told them it’s not completely unrealistic that AI and robots could almost all current human tasks better than humans within a couple years, they’d look at you sideways. And no one is acting as if this is an important issue in the midterms. Yeah a lot of people might have heard of this

concept but almost no one is acting as if it’s actually happening. The midterm issues are mostly BAU with the exception of like “I don’t want data centers in my backyard” meanwhile we have a human extinction level threat on our hands

Nah that’s fair, I may have come into this conversations with bad assumptions myself so that could be on me. I agree with you there, I know lots of adults who think ai is like the invention of a calculator or an automated elevator, a job replacer of the type we’ve seen before. Plenty of adults don’t understand at all the exponential nature of this technology and how apocalyptic it could be

It’s all good, like truly I can’t really blame anyone right now for being hostile to the guy who seems like a pretentious dick who knows everything. And I can understand how it could come across that way. But the real issue is there’s like <10k people at the frontier labs with access to the most sophisticated models who can truly understand the implications of what they’re creating. But obviously it’s a conflict of interest to ask them to audit themselves about the existential threats lol

And as someone who thinks they’re pretty technically literate and tries to keep up with this stuff, I look at people who aren’t really that and just worry. Like not because I think they’re totally dumbasses; they’re my friends and family, but just because they aren’t even beginning to grasp what’s going on. And whatever comes of this whole thing is obviously going to outpace the distribution of important information via Facebook channels. I just worry for the people I love because what’s

Yeah I totally agree with you though, it’s terrifying. It’s gotten to the point where I’m not really banking on a stable future, I’m trying to get the most out of life now because I have this sickly feeling that things are going to go downhill fast at some point in my life. Trying to spend time with my parents, brothers, friends..etc more than I am focusing on building some career or saving for retirement
