Abortion is a huge deal in this context. But you do know that people can be discriminated against in a way that’s not enshrined in law? Women *are* discriminated against in hiring despite the laws, are in significant danger of sexual assault, are often harassed, and do not receive adequate health care. Also in many religiously conservative communities women are not allowed to make their own decisions, including divorce, despite the laws.
Agreed, misandry isn't systemic the way misogyny is. But that doesn't make men's pain fake. It comes from the same system. bell hooks, one of the most important Black feminist thinkers, argued in The Will to Change that patriarchy's first act of violence isn't against women. It's against boys, who get taught to kill off their own feelings to count as men. Women aren't the source of that wound. Patriarchy is.
That's why men's suicide rates, isolation, and never being allowed to ask for help are feminist issues. They come from the same rules that police women. Calling it "misandry" points men at women as the enemy, when the thing actually hurting them is the system feminism is trying to take apart. hooks's whole argument was that men have a stake in ending patriarchy too.
Also look at the toddler comparison. It makes its point by casting women as children: small, harmless, not worth taking seriously. That's misogyny doing the work in the same sentence that's arguing misandry isn't real. You can name a power imbalance without shrinking women to do it. That's the trap hooks traced: patriarchal thinking shows up even in people who believe they're against it.
hey OP, idk if I’m a dumbass but I don’t perceive you to be asking in as bad faith as the rest of this comment section. the “ACAB = AMAB” thing is a little misleading. Whereas all cops are bastards for voluntarily buying into an abusive system, thereby making themselves complicit in it, men ofc do not make such a choice. the choice comes later when you find yourself among misogynists and fail to speak up, or uncritically buy into misogynistic narratives abt women that make oneself feel comfort
nobody in this comment section is saying you carry some original sin for being born a man. patriarchal societies produce men that implicitly affirm those same structures (often to the detriment of the man, too, as other commenters pointed out), and those that neglect to interrogate their societal conditioning find themselves perpetuating the structural injustices we describe. men are bastards when they fail to do so, and proceed w/ blissful ignorance, at the expense of the women in their lives
