What if we had universal background checks that only revealed whether the buyer was legally allowed to purchase a gun? In other words, the authorities *never* record serial numbers, so there’s no “registry”. Would that be acceptable to the nra?

Today, ATF and state forms record the identity of the seller, the buyer, and the gun(s) being transferred. If the purpose of a background check is merely to ensure the buyer is eligible, then why do they need all those details, which the ATF stores in paper-form indefinitely? By law the ATF is barred from digitizing the forms (creating a registry database) but few ppl trust that they haven’t already

are the paper records there just in case the gun is used in a crime?
