I have heard that their LGBTQ+ positive stance largely evolved as a business decision (it brought in lots of money), and while since then their major cities have become relatively queer friendly, it still sucks to be a queer citizen in most of the country and legally (for example no legal gender status/marker changes even after surgery, and a ILO report found “daily discrimination and humiliation” against trans people in the workforce).
Thailand is way better than most SE Asian countries on these issues, but they’re still an SE Asian country. All this said- you should be fine as long as you remain in a major city and are okay not having your legal gender match your actual identity at least until they pass something to allow it, hopefully in the next few years.
