would it be improper for someone who doesn’t speak the language to still pronounce Hawai’i the same as someone who does? I always want to be super respectful of the origins of language & words but I’ve never been able to ask someone who intimately knows the language of Hawai’i.

please pronounce it like a Hawaiian speaker would! don't say Hawaiʻian, but when saying the place name, pronounce the glottal stop (ʻokina)
