Honestly this goes for many liberals too. Our society has an empathy problem in that most people lack it, and the dominant ideology of neoliberalism abhors it.

As a previous republican for the first 2 years that I got into politics I was that way. I don’t say that proudly as whenever I realized how certain things could affect me I because more liberal. It was then when I realized how selfish I was and how many different people could be hurt by different policies that didn’t affect me. I became more empathetic towards others and made a promise to myself to never go back.
