For the space race, it completely depends on where you draw the finish line. Most people agree that the US built a better space program than the Soviets, with fewer failures. It also won the race to the moon which was the most impressive milestone. First satellite and first human in orbit are very cool, though. Also only Soviets died in outer space which is a big detractor from saying they won the space race
