condos do not belong on barrier islands, and we should probably stop developing over our wetlands (since we’ve destroyed most of them already). sorry, ecology takes precedence over economy. if that makes me an idiot, so be it. the people who work in tourism never see much of the ‘benefits’ it brings anyways. only the owners

tourism has done nothing for SC but line the pockets of our wealthy while random people with no ties or incentive to even care about the place they’re visiting come and trash what has already been destroyed to accommodate them. wasteful, exploitative, and useless industry

There are 49 states besides SC, and some of them rely *heavily* on tourism. This isn’t just about your community. Fair point about the ecological impacts though

in the states that *heavily* rely on tourism it still really only benefits rich ppl and corporations rather than the local communities

Are you aware that almost 1 in 10 jobs in Utah are directly or indirectly affected by tourism? How does that not benefit the local community as well?

In states with hotel tax or tourism-heavy counties with sales tax, I think it’s difficult to argue that it doesn’t benefit the local community. They’re shifting the burden of taxes from the local community to the tourists, who are usually wealthy. The tourists are indirectly helping fund infrastructure and education for the local community
