Is it? Segregation was a cultural value of the South. Racism was an integral part of their culture. They said as much. Northerners were imposing their cultural values onto the South. But it was legitimately for a good cause.

The South’s values were religious. The southern baptists were founded because the northern baptists were anti-slavery. Racial supremacy was enshrined through the Curse of Ham of the Old Testament. The KKK was a devoutly evangelical Protestant organization.
