So the democrats always get a free pass because the republicans are worse? I don’t buy that.I don’t think anyone gives dems a free pass. People criticize Mamdani all the time, same with Obama, and Kamala, I see less unwaivering support for dems than republicans have for their worst representatives. I think left leaning and dems actually hold their politicians accountable very often.
I don’t particularly love Democrats either, I find them to be spineless and ineffectual. I think they tail their base by at LEAST a decade, even on social issues, which is the only area they ever care to be meaningfully progressive, because to do so in economic or foreign policy matters would hurt their big money donors. I know all this. I also am from a red state, and can tell you, the gap between the two parties is STILL the size of the fucking Grand Canyon. I hate it too. But that’s how it be
Criticize all you want. I do the same thing. I also cast a blue ballot. Criticizing the Democratic Party and its politicians is good and necessary. When you say that it’s not harm reduction at all, you’re just wrong though. Republican governance objectively does more harm, and that’s that.
It’s not harm reduction to pander to minorities when it’s politically convenient and cast them aside when it’s not; re: the anti-trans ads and rhetoric they’ve been pushing in various states. And what they do is definitely not some universal moral good because whatever harm they “reduce,” it still continues for many groups just as bad or almost as bad. At best it is harm redistribution.
And I take particular offense to white liberals usurping the language of harm reduction, which originally is a public health term relating to needle exchange programs and rehabilitation efforts, when they don’t know or see the lives of homeless people and homeless addicts or work with them. Another two groups the Dems do not help
