Karl Baer was born in 1885, had gender-affirming surgery in 1906, and was legally recognized as male in 1907. Lili Elbe was born in 1888 and had an orchiectomy, ovary transplant, and penectomy, as well as her legal name and sex changed, in 1930, and a vaginoplasty in 1931.

Magnus Hirschfeld was a research and the pioneer of Sexology as a field. He conducted gender-affirming care and was a long outspoken LGBTQ advocate and founded the Institute of Sexual Science. Lot of research on transition surgery and psychiatric research.

Dr. Alan Hart was born in 1890. He sought psychological aid in an attempt to be satisfied with womanhood but failed. He had a hysterectomy around 1917 and began HRT after WWII. He is also a pioneer of tuberculosis treatment and the use of X-rays. He has saved thousands of lives. Dora Richter was born in 1892. She had an orchiectomy in 1922 and a penectomy and vaginoplasty in 1931. Trans people have always been here.

Some of the most famous images of Nazi Book burnings involve burning the textbooks and research from the institute. Hirschfeld, who was Jewish and gay, was relentlessly attacked in Nazi propaganda that said “The Nazi party wants to protect your children from these predators.”

It should go without saying we are seeing these same problems with the current dehumanization of transpersons in our government and the ignorance on display by mainstream news. Be vigilant of rhetoric attacking against our transgender friends and allies.
