I don’t think its right to make fun of bad people for characteristics they can’t control, like having a disability or odd appearance. You might not mean it that way, but everyone else with those characteristics hears that you look down on them for it.*snaps suspenders* whelp! Time to kick the hornets nest and play devils advocate! Fuck it. Policing people’s speech is wrong. There is hate speech there is inciting of violence or discrimination, then sure, control that. But if it’s voluntary, or within the individuals control, it’s fair game. I can say I think Mar A Lago plastic surgery is stupid. I can say I think ozempic face is unattractive. There’s a line between social pressure, humor, and harassment.
yes i think kimberly guilfoyle looks bad. however the better argument here is to criticize why women are undergoing surgery to look younger/more attractive, why mar a lago face is as ostentatious as it is (sign of money/status/connection), and why plastic surgery is becoming so popular, bad, and/or excessive. i feel like plastic surgery addressed issues secondary to another concern, like excess skin, crooked septum, impaired vision, etc
basically yes karoline leavitt lip filler pic is embarrassing for her but at the same time she’s 28. the big thing is, the trump circle is spending copious amounts of money conforming to a beauty standard without acknowledging it’s existence and it’s purpose in right-wing crowds. also, i think plastic surgery for celebrities grows out of seeing themselves too much (photo, video) and that just carries over into the mainstream when those services become more affordable
i agree like mar a lago face DOES look bad. to me, im just quicker to argue that trump is somebody who has always been superficial, objectifying, and materialistic. it’s no surprise to me that people who want his approval will shell out on their appearance (surgery, clothing) and public perception. the fact that they don’t understand that about him, THEN get 200k in bad plastic surgery, THEN deny having it is what’s more laughable to me. it’s like the kardashians kinda idk
plastic surgery is tough because ofc i want people to feel confident in their appearance and it can change that. however i think it’s worth understanding how people getting plastic surgery has only increased how self conscious people are. like you do not need to be afraid of wrinkles or your nose or your hairline or whatever. i will get old my boobs will sag my hair will thin and i don’t care, i just don’t subscribe to the idea that anybody fundamentally NEEDS cosmetic surgery to look *better*
I feel like there is nuance. If someone has a defect or accident and has cosmetic surgery, it would be extremely rude to make fun of them for that. I just feel like the plastic surgery these people get is totally fair game though. Its hard to put into an exact standard, but I know a line exists somewhere
definitely, but that’s exactly why commented! from what i understand in your post, it’s harmful to make fun of people knowing that other people could internalize those criticisms. completely agree. i also agree mar a lago face looks dumb. my point is that the fair game is to criticize people who are poorly signaling allegiance to trump (w/ appearance), rather than the lower-hanging fruit of getting plastic surgery or their appearance. idk if this makes sense sorry king xx
Harassment is not okay, but restricting the ability of a society to judge smokers and push them out of their establishments does not end smoking. Society has the right to collectively shame things. And it has the right to make humor out of things. It’s a line, but if it’s voluntary or in someone’s control, yeah, it’s fair game.
