Hot take: give the National Guard a break. A lot of us (myself included) joined to pay for school and stabilize our lives. That’s not the same as ICE, and it matters. Thankfully, my unit hasn’t been deployed for this, and I pray that it never happens

I genuinely do feel bad for them. The first thing I said when this all started was “man how disappointing to go through all that commitment to defend your country, just to go babysit useless cops against your will”

It’s less that the guard has been complicit in trumps takeovers of American cities and more that we really don’t know what the military draws the line at before they rule an order unlawful. I understand joining to pay for school or to protect the country but at the current moment the military seems like it’s being used for very undemocratic purposes

As a member of the military, we are conditioned to follow the orders of our leaders. There’s no space for debate or deliberation. It’s up to the upper echelon to reject the unlawful orders, as they actually have the space to debate and voice their opinions.

While that’s definitely true, you also do have to take personal accountability once it gets to a point. Like at what point are you complicit even if it’s not deemed unlawful, at what point is it immoral? If something bad is deemed as legal, would you still follow orders?

In the oath of enlistment you swear to obey “any lawful order” and that lawful part is how things like massacres in Vietnam still had the perpetrators prosecuted because the court martial determined they should have disobeyed it since it wasn’t lawful

SM’s are protected as long as it’s not obviously unlawful, as most SM’s are lawfully ignorant. I hope that SM’s would stop short of something like aggravated assault, but we have to acknowledge that there are some SM’s who don’t have the same moral compasses or beliefs. But I digress. Most of the orders that the grunts have been receiving have been lawfully grey at best, from what I’ve seen.
