It’s really fascinating to see how rapidly conservatives started repeating that “Europe has no freedom of speech” verbatim as soon as the EU made Elon angy because they fined Twitter for violating transparency laws.

It’s like damn Elon really can just insert a new idea in their head because someone personally made him mad and they will repeat it.

Funnily enough, about 70% of examples of “no free speech” come from Great Britain. Which has a centuries long track record of stifling speech. Blasphemy laws, intense libel laws, and the recurring British pearl-clutching over sexual morality.

A dude who I cut ties with had issues with English internet laws being used to jail people for social media posts.

The UK does have some freedom of speech issues lately and Germany as well, but I wouldn’t say it’s so bad that the US government should be saying something. And it’s not like freedom of speech is going well here either rn

But Germany and the UK’s issues started before Musk or Vance drew attention to them

it’s wild how several organizations in the UK that claim to be about free speech are completely silent about the arrests of Gaza protesters because all they care about is when transphobes or racists get in trouble

That’s unfortunate yet unsurprising
