No amount of asbestos is considered safe. Products that contain greater than 1 percent of asbestos minerals are considered to be asbestos-containing. The more asbestos you are exposed to, the more likely you are to get an asbestos disease. Asbestosis and lung cancer are dose-related diseases.
It’s only being reconsidered due to legal obligations under the TSCA to reassess the risk and necessity. The EPA knows it’s dangerous, and it will be banned, but they’re kinda being forced to reconsider simply due to poorly written old laws. The same thing would have happened under a Harris administration as well.
The 20% of smokers who get lung cancer make up almost 90% of people who will get lung cancer in their lifetime. I think that’s a risk informed adults should be allowed to take like they are now, but I feel like RFK is probably arguing against the Surgeon General’s Warning on cigarettes.
The Toxic Substances Control Act was passed in 1976… no laws were made or removed to cause this issue, it’s just a mistake in the fine print that was never corrected half a century ago. Don’t get me wrong I’m not the biggest fan of Trump either, but it’s a bit of stretch to blame Trump for an Act that was passed when he was 20 years old lol
